What is the difference between e-Passport and MRP?

The E-passport is a more secure, official, and internationally recognized passport than MRP. A biometric e-passport (also known as an electronic passport) is a passport booklet that has an embedded electronic microprocessor chip which contains biometric information that can be used to authenticate the identity of the passport holder.  On the other hand, the MRP has a machine-readable zone (rather than an electronic chip) in Optical Character Recognition (OCR) format.

How do I know if my passport is MRP/E-Passport/Handwritten passport?

Please read “Know your E-passport Documents” from the passport page of the Consulate’s website (https://cgbdsydney.gov.bd/consular-services/passport/

Unfortunately, Consulate does not issue/reissue Machine Readable Passport (MRP). Please contact Bangladesh High Commission, Canberra in this regard.

What documents do I need to apply for an e-Passport?

An applicant must obtain NID (National ID)/Smart ID or English version of the digital Bangladesh birth certificate (17 digit online verifiable) to be eligible to apply for e-Passport. Besides, other documents are required. Please visit the passport page of the Consulate’s website (cgbdsydney.gov.bd) for detail   information.

I have old handwritten passport. Am I eligible for an e-Passport?

You can replace your old handwritten passport with an e-passport if you have NID. If you do not have any NID, you must possess an English version of the digital Bangladeshi birth certificate (17 digit online verifiable). Other documents are also required. Please visit the consulate’s website for more information.

** If you have both an NID and a digital birth certificate, you must declare both. Note that the NID and birth certificate are not interchangeable: the birth certificate is only a substitute if you don’t have an NID.

How can I check if my birth certificate is online verifiable?

Please click on the link to verify your birth certificate: https://everify.bdris.gov.bd/

My NID has errors, such as incorrect spellings of my name or my parents’ names, or a wrong date of birth. Can I use this NID to apply for an e-Passport?

Yes, you can. In that case, during application, do not declare your NID. Only use birth certificate information to lodge your application online.

Even if your MRP has correct details, if there are discrepancies in your name, your parents’ names, or your date of birth on your primary documents, you are ineligible to apply for an e-passport. You must first rectify these details in your primary documents before proceeding with the e-passport application.

I possess an NID with accurate details, but my birth certificate contains some errors. Can I still apply for an e-passport?

Yes, you can. The NID is the primary document required for the e-passport application. If the information on your NID is accurate, you are eligible to apply for an e-passport. However, you should rectify the errors of your birth certificate to get rid of any discrepancy between the identity documents.

The name on my NID is incorrect. Is it possible to modify my name during the e-passport application process?

No, you can’t. You must submit details consistent with your NID. Any deviation from the information on your NID will lead to the rejection of your application.

There’s a minor spelling mistake in my name on my NID. Can I apply for an e-passport with these small errors and correct them during the application process?

No, you can’t. You need to correct any errors on your NID/Smart ID before applying for an e-passport.

I don’t have an NID/smart ID or a digital birth certificate. I only have an old handwritten Bangladeshi passport. Am I eligible to apply for an e-Passport?

For this, applicants need to obtain a Bangladeshi digital birth certificate and submit the proof of their parents’ Bangladeshi identity. I have got married recently. I need to update my spouse detail on my passport. Can I apply for a new passport despite the long validity of my passport?

Due to the high number of e-passport applications, we prioritize applications based on immediate necessity, such as those with expiring passports. We advise newlyweds not to apply for a new passport solely based on marital status, as it does not influence the applicant’s immigration status or application.

Do I need to attest my marriage certificate for e-passport application?

Marriage certificate issued in Bangladesh needs to be attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. If the marriage is registered in Australia, certificate must be authenticated by DFAT. For marriages registered outside of these two countries, the certificate should first be attested by the embassy of the respective country, followed by authentication from DFAT. All attestations should not be older than 6 months.
